Consonance relates to a more pleasant experience for the listener while dissonance relates to a less pleasant experience. The judgment of whether any given interval falls into one category or the other has been arbitrarily applied throughout history, with a general tendency for the progressing acceptance of smaller intervals. The terms are also used in a stricter sense in theories of tonal harmony.
